D-Link video phones are shaping the future of Internet telephony

What would Alexander Graham Bell think of the new D-Link video phones? When he invented the telephone could he even conceive of how far someone could take his initial design and improve upon it? He might have been amused at touchtone phones, or even shocked at wireless phones, but he might have thought it sorcery to communicate with someone “face to face” over a phone. D-Link video phones are made to push the envelope of communications past anything unrecognizable in the past and are shaping the future of Internet telephony.

D-Link video phones and their innovations

  • Uses broadband technology,
  • Does not require a personal computer,
  • Can be used with any TV, and
  • Is affordable for small businesses or average consumer.

In 2003, D-Link introduced the first affordable mass market video phone, the DVC-1000. In the same year, it won the American Electronics Association’s Most Innovative Product/Technology Award. Using broadband technology and a TV connection, people are no longer tethered to their personal computers to make a videoconferencing call. Since then, D-Link video phones have continued to improve in technology with the addition of the DVC-1100 and the DVC-2000 to their product line.

The DVC-1100 continues the innovative trend by making the system wireless. The DVC-2000 even comes with its own built-in screen. All the D-Link video phones are easy to install using wizards that guide the user step-by-step through the installation process.

How innovative are D-Link video phones? The technology itself can clearly be seen to be cutting edge. But, one thing that is often forgotten when understanding how “innovative” a technology is, is the effect it has on society. Clearly, if we can make calls over an Internet connection for free this will have a large impact on how we do business and what industries will survive in the future.

Right now, a video phone may seem a luxury. After Alexander Graham Bell invented the phone, only six phones were sold in the first month. Now, almost every household has a phone and it is now viewed as a necessity and not a luxury. As more and more businesses cut costs and improve quality, a broadband video phone may well be a natural evolution in mass communications and D-Link video phones will be the first to capitalize on this trend.
