  • » UDP (User Datagram Protocol) [top]
    UDP is a communications protocol that makes possible the sending of datagram messages from one computer to an application in another computer. It’s connectionless and suffers from unreliability, since it is unable to check for any errors in delivery.

    A unicast is video conferencing that can only deliver data to one user or site, usually carried out over packet-switched networks.

    These are various hardware and software technologies that enable real-time video, data, and audio communications and collaboration over long distances.

    Telephones that are capable of duplex transmission of audio and video.
     
  • » Video Server [top]
    A video server is a file server with substantial hard disc storage size used to store MPEG compressed data. Video servers provide content to end-users over LANs and WANs.

    VPN is a private communications network connection (based on TCP/IP) that enables authorized individuals secure access to private information on a network. VPN can be used as a transport media for video conferencing.

    A WAN is a communications network serving a geographically large area using satellite communications or telephone lines. The Internet is a WAN.

    This is a digital, real-time camera used to deliver still and motion video images over the Internet.

    White boarding describes the placing of shared documents on a ‘whiteboard’ for other conference participants to work with. Several users can write or draw on this area, which is displayed onscreen. Like video conferencing, white boarding plays an important role in teleconferencing, since it provides the element of visual communication and collaboration.
     
  • » WWW (World Wide Web) [top]
    It’s also known as ‘the Web’, the WWW is technically ‘a hypertext multimedia-based system’, allowing users to access the Internet. Hyperlinks embedded in web pages allow users to move from page to page.
     
  • » Zoom [top]
    Many cameras and graphical applications allow the user to magnify a small area or shrink it so that more can be seen; this is known as zoom.
