Listen Up! Reliable video phone information makes choosing easy

Your daughter and her family moved to Sweden with the grandkids…it’s not quite the end of the world, but you know you aren’t going to see nearly enough of them, so you’ve decided that the solution is for each one of you is to get a video phone. She has hers ready to go -- but when you started to look at the phone products incorporating video available on the market, you realized there was a lot more to consider than you originally thought!

Do you choose on sound quality? Picture quality? Price? It can be very confusing, but that’s where we come in. Our experts have researched dozens of videophones and explored the pluses and minuses of each kind so that you don’t have to slog through lots of unnecessary information -- we pare it down to the basics and give you solid information for making a sound decision based on your video communication needs.

All of the video telephony products and related services we mention on our site are the best we could find. But don’t just take our word for it, read the user reviews available at our recommended merchant sites to find out what other people think about each product. We also know how important it is to find a quality product at a great price, but remember that paying a little extra is sometimes the difference between above average and fantastic, so get the system that is the absolute best you can afford for years of quality service.

If you want to set up easily and use your standard analog phone lines, your best bets are the Vialta Beamer and the Aiptek 2000C. Both of these are viable solutions with good picture quality for an analog connection. Vialta gives you the flexibility of two models -- one system doesn’t have an integral picture, but instead provides picture through your television, a nice money saving option. The Aiptek 2000C is actually a videophone, one of the few analog models on the market, and provides an impressive image rate of up to 15 frames per second. Easy set up with no computer skills needed mean this is a cinch for anyone.

If you want to significantly improve your picture quality, take a step up to broadband. Working off the same line as your computer connection, a broadband video telephone has state-of-the-art picture quality and amazing picture speed and clarity.

The D-Link DVC-1000 provides flexibility because you can attach this wireless unit to your existing broadband and TV and instantly has video telephony capabilities without even owning a computer! For those who prefer a video telephone with built-in picture and bundled calling plan, the Packet8 broadband video calling plan is perfect. This attractive, space saving video-capable handset has full-motion video and crystal-clear sound with unlimited U.S. and Canadian video and regular calling for a flat monthly fee.

Similar to the Packet8 video telephone, the Motorola OJO Personal Video Phone combines a monthly service plan with specialized video telephony hardware.  Unlike Packet8, the OJO requires both a broadband Internet connection and an analog phone line.  However, if quality is your top priority and price is not an issue, then this may be your best option.  Read more about this product in this comprehensive Motorola OJO Personal Video Phone review (06-22-05) by the editors of PC Magazine.
