Video teleconferencing is becoming a popular learning tool in many schools. The term video teleconferencing refers to the transmission of both audio and video images back and forth between two or more parties. You may be wondering how this technology can really benefit students in the classroom. Let us look at some of the real benefits achieved from using video teleconferencing in schools.

  • Expands learning opportunities -- Video teleconferencing technology can connect students in schools across town or clear across the world. Many museums, science centers, and colleges understand the benefits of video teleconferencing, and provide special educational programs via video teleconference that schools anywhere can access.

One example is the Tennessee Aquarium, which is located in Chattanooga, TN. They provide video teleconferences that consist of detailed multi-media presentations on different animal species. They talk directly with the students and customize a presentation towards the specific age group of the classroom. This is a great way to supplement learning in any school. When subjects are presented in a new and creative way, students tend to be excited and often forget that what they are actually doing is learning.

Another great area of study in schools where video teleconferencing can really be helpful is Geography. Many schools have adopted the practice of having students prepare a presentation on the geographical area where their school is located. They then present their project to other schools via video teleconference. As students begin to hear and see directly from different schools in different geographical regions, new places begin to feel more real to them. Classrooms across the state, across the country, or even across the globe can benefit greatly from these live presentations from fellow students.

  • Adds excitement to traditional methods -- When students learn about real life topics directly from other students with whom they can relate directly to, it causes them to be more receptive to the information presented. Using video teleconferencing as a supplement to learning can add a level of interest and diversity to the classroom. As the concept of video teleconferencing becomes more and more popular, the opportunities to access new and different learning opportunities become endless.

  • Teaches planning and organizational skills -- Since a video teleconference usually involves a presentation, it requires some level of preparation before hand. When students have the task of researching a specific topic and preparing an in-depth presentation, they must learn to organize facts, determine which are the most important, and combine them into a clear and concise presentation. This encourages teamwork and collaboration within the classroom as well as a large level of organizing and planning.

  • Teaches public speaking skills -- Anytime students have to present in front of others, they are forced to communicate more effectively. The nature of video teleconferencing often requires more focus on clarity of dialog since back and forth conversation is less feasible during a video teleconference than it is with face-to-face communication.
