Beyond the boardroom -- how videoconferencing companies are using their solutions to benefit our society
October 04, 2006

At first glance, videoconferencing solutions are often
viewed simply as tools to facilitate corporate meetings.
However, the real value videoconferencing solutions can
bring goes well beyond the walls of the corporate boardroom.
Several videoconferencing companies in the market today are
extremely innovative in how they market their solutions.
They actually focus their efforts on applying
videoconferencing solutions to help improve societal
problems and benefit our world as a whole.
Let us review some of the main industries that are
benefiting from the use of videoconferencing solutions. We
will also look at some of the individual contributions being
made by some of the bigger videoconferencing providers such
as Polycom,
and
Tandberg.
Polycom
Polycom
is a videoconferencing company that provides solutions for
all ranges of videoconferencing needs. Their systems have
been implemented in a number of different industries
including: medical, financial, and manufacturing sectors.
Polycom's systems have been used to facilitate medical
consultations with the critically ill allowing them to
remain in the comfort of their own home.
Their systems have also been implemented in several large
manufacturing companies to help facilitate communication
with employees located throughout the world. Perhaps their
most noble venture was their donation of videoconferencing
systems to the Medical Missions for Children organization.
Their systems are being used to improve pediatric care in
underprivileged nations using telemedicine.
Tandberg
Another big provider of videoconferencing solutions and
services is
Tandberg.
Their company's mission is to change the way people
communicate. Their videoconferencing solutions are utilized
across multiple different industries just like Polycom.
However, Tandberg has been somewhat of a pioneer in the
videoconferencing industry by being the first to deliver
several key technologies. Some of these include:
- 3G Gateway -- allows 3G mobile phone users
access to any videoconferencing system from anywhere in
the world.
- CD-quality digital audio -- this technology
creates higher clarity and stereo sound during multimedia
videoconference presentations.
- Duo-video -- this allows viewer to see a PC
presentation, the presenter, and all meeting participants
all at the same time.
Tandberg also focuses many of its efforts on developing
solutions that help address environmental challenges. They
seek to develop systems that reduce energy consumption,
contain recyclable components, and comply with stringent
environmental regulations. Tandberg strongly believes that
their innovative technology and creative solutions can
significantly improve the quality of life of their
customers.
Another great example of a videoconferencing solution
provider that is utilizing their videoconferencing systems
to make a difference in peoples lives is
Motion Media PLC. Motion Media, which is now owned by
Scotty
Group, worked with the Norwegian Ministry of Social
Affairs to provide every deaf child under the age of 18 with
a videophone system. This allowed them to communicate over
the phone with sign language.
The uses for videoconferencing solutions really are
endless. It is comforting to see how companies that
manufacture videoconferencing systems are focusing their
expertise and efforts on helping to make our lives a little
easier.
